History Lessons Come to Life
History Lessons Come to Life
St. Philip Neri’s 8th grade Social Studies classes have come to life with recent visits from area visitors who brought their personal experiences from the past into the classroom.
At left, Tuskegee Airman, Dr. Eugene Richardson paid a March visit. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States armed forces.  Dr. Richardson spent 40 weeks of training at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama during the 1940s.  The Tuskegee Airmen were subjected to racial discrimination, both within and outside the Army.  Despite these many adversities, the Tuskegee Airmen trained and flew with distinction.
Dr. Richardson shared his first-hand account of the Tuskegee Airmen, as well as a history of African Americans in the armed forces, with the students.
At right, students welcomed another special guest to their classroom, Anneliese Nossbaum, who shared her personal Holocaust story with the class.  As a teenager, Mrs. Nossbaum experienced the atrocities of both the Auschwitz and Mauthhausen concentration camps.  She showed the students a metal comb and soap dish, the only two possessions she had in the world when she was liberated from the camp in 1945.  This memorable experience was made possible by the Philadelphia Holocaust Awareness Museum.
