Boy Scout Troop 542, sponsored by Supplee Presbyterian Church in
Maple Glen, recently recognized three Boy Scouts for achieving the
highest rank attainable in Scouting. The boys, Alex Crotinger, James
DeFelice and Clayton McLemore, were awarded medals representing the
rank of Eagle Scout, and their parents were recognized for their
loving support and mentoring. Leading the ceremony were Troop 542
Scoutmaster Jay Eibner and Troop Committee Chairman Al Moffatt.
Among the honored guests who spoke at the event were Pennsylvania
State Representative Todd Stephens, Rev. David Canan of Trinity
Episcopal Church in Ambler and youth leader Jesse Robinson of New
Life Presbyterian Church in Dresher. Speaking on behalf of the young
men were Eagle Scout Richard Crotinger, brother of Alex, Keith
Humphreys, elder of New Life Presbyterian Church, and Ralph Hall, Boy
Scouts of America ‘Friends of Scouting’ District Chairman.
To earn the rank of Eagle the young men were required to accomplish
several difficult tasks. They had to earn at least 21 merit badges,
which represent life skills attained such as first aid, life saving
and citizenship, as well as other skills such as composite materials
science, electronics and entrepreneurship. In addition they were
required to successfully serve in a leadership position within the
troop, show Scout spirit in their daily lives, and to perform a
significant service leadership project for their community.
Alex Crotinger, a home schooled senior, earned a total of 48 merit
badges and served as Senior Patrol Leader in the troop. For his
service project, Alex led a team of 28 volunteers in a 302 hour
effort to restore a fire-pit area at Worldwide Evangelization for
Christ (WEC) International, in Whitemarsh. Alex was previously
awarded Troop 542’s “John Allemang Award” for exemplary Scouting.
James DeFelice, a senior and wrestler at Phi-Mont Christian Academy
earned a total of 40 merit badges and served as Chaplain Aide and
Assistant Senior Patrol Leader in the troop. James led a 220 hour
service project which benefitted Springfield Township’s Cisco Park
with the construction of a 30-yard fence which will preserve an
important wildlife area. James also serves as a chairman of the
National Honor Society and works as a camp counselor for
underprivileged youth.
Clayton McLemore, a senior at Upper Dublin High School, earned a
total of 32 merit badges and served as Lead Instructor, Patrol Leader
and Troop Guide, the latter being a position which trains the
youngest Scouts. Fort Washington State Park’s Militia Hill Day Use
Area was the beneficiary of Clayton’s service project, where he led a
team of 20 volunteers in restoring a campsite in the park. In a 200
hour project his team restored seven picnic tables, constructed new
tables and benches and refurbished two fire pits. Clayton was
recognized as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and serves as
acolyte at Trinity Episcopal Church in Ambler.
Troop 542 celebrated its 50th year in 2010, which was also the 100th
anniversary of Scouting in America, and over that time the troop has
mentored and recognized a total of 108 Eagle Scouts.
