Summer Fun At Jeanes Library
Email Print

Whether your child is registered for a reading club or not, he/she is welcome to participate in the special activities you can read about on our website or find out about inside the library.  Let me just whet your appetite with some highlights for the entire family.  On Thursday, June 30th, at 7 pm, “Two of a Kind,” an award-winning, national touring husband-wife duo, will present an interactive musical concert.   You can get a taste of their music by borrowing one of their CD’s from our library.  Animals are always a favorite so we invited the Elmwood Park Zoo to bring some of their residents on July 14th at 7 pm.  International professional storyteller Kristin Pedemonti has been a favorite of ours.  She spends much of the school year traveling as a literacy volunteer to places like Belize and Guatemala.  You can experience some of her storytelling on YouTube before seeing her in person on August 4.  There will be a magician (July 28) and a special program where we’ll watch a demonstration and then participate in learning some steps of Sattriya, a classical dance of India (Aug. 11).

Each Tuesday will be different activity planned and run by local teens for younger children.  Children will have to pre-register for some Terrific Tuesdays, such as a Harry Potter party (July 13) and Stuffed Animal Sleepover (Aug. 2).  Others will be open to all children.

Regular daytime storytimes will resume on June 15th  after our spring break and continue through August 11th.  Toddlers (2 ½-3 ½ ) will meet on Wednesdays at 10:15.  Babies up through about 2 ½ years, our Mother Goose storytime group, gather for songs, stories and movement on Thursdays at 10:15.  Their class is followed by the preschool group at 11:15.  Watch for special events on some of their regularly scheduled days.

The library’s Youth Advisory Board is busy planning activities for their peers, students entering grades 6-12.  We all get a kick out of game shows so the teens will have their own version of Wheel of Fortune on Saturday, June 18.  We’ll celebrate the debut of the last Harry Potter movie on July 13 with a visit to our version of Hogwarts.  Because we’ve had so much fun in previous years with our Christmas in July activity, we’ve schedule this year’s for July 25, 2011.  Books for Bucks will conclude on August 21st with the annual teen auction.  Teens who have earned “book bucks” (paper money) through reading, attending library activities and volunteering, will bid on and “purchase” items such as games and gift cards.  For those teens who enjoy spending time with young children, there will be plenty of volunteer opportunities.  For more information about volunteering, contact Beth Hargis, Youth Services Librarian, or Lucille Leap, volunteer coordinator.

Book discussion/activity groups for students from grade 3 to 8 will be held throughout the summer.  “Beachcombers” for those entering 2nd and 3rd grades will read stories about the beach or ocean.  Camping will be the theme of the books read by the “Backpackers” (grades 4 & 5).  The middle school group will read a variety of titles.

Whether you are 7 months or 17 years old, the William Jeanes Library has activities to brighten your summer days.  Visit us soon at 4051 Joshua Road in Lafayette Hill or on the web at jeaneslibrary.org to get more information.  Phone calls (610-828-0441) are always welcome, too.
