The WCSC has helped thousands of non-English speaking immigrants with English instruction as well as medical, legal, educational counseling, social services support, and translation services. When immigrants first arrive in the U.S., they need a lot of support in every aspect of their lives, including educational, financial, medical, social, legal and other areas. Most want to achieve the American way of life without relying on welfare or other financial assistance. They want to find jobs and help their children become educated and go to college. They want to achieve financial security and self-sufficiency. Currently WCSC provides over 5,500 social services each year.” Mrs. Koh expressed her appreciation to the Connelly Foundation, “For a third consecutive year, we at WCSC appreciate your generous gift of support for our programs. The Connelly Foundation’s support to our Center will make a big difference in the lives of hundreds of children and adults.” Citizenship is also taught in several of WCSC’s classes and is very helpful to immigrants who want to live and work in our area into the future. WCSC had a record number of students in 2010 and helped more adults learn English than in any prior year. This grant support will allow the Won Community Service Center to continue to offer its free social services and ongoing English as a Second Language classes. In 2010-11, students came from S. Korea, Mexico, Japan, Brazil, Peru, Vietnam, China, Philippines, Cuba, Haiti, Jordan, Ethiopia, Colombia and other places. There is a significant need for ESL in this region. In Montgomery County, 4% of residents over five years of age speak English "less than very well." Approximately 30,000 people of the foreign-born population (45%) are not U.S. citizens. Many of these people could benefit from ESL instruction and assistance in applying for and in passing the citizenship exams.
