FWES Still Jumping
In last month’s issue of the Enterprise the fund raising success of
each of the elementary school’s in the UD School District was noted.
Two students, in particular were recognized for their efforts in
raising more than $1,000 each in connection with Jump Rope for Heart,
supporting the American Heart Association. Since that time the money
has continued to roll in. The total - even after the event - was

Viewed as technologial wonders, an example is Cunard’s Britannia of

Jarrettown Elementary Race for Education
Jarrettown Elementary Race for Education
The Jarrettown PTA sponsored their 3rd annual Race for Education on
Friday, May 13th. The students of Jarrettown Elementary wrote
letters to friends, family, neighbors and local businesses asking for
their support in sponsoring the Race. On the day of the race all
Jarrettown students and staff walked a quarter mile course at the
school as many times as they could in an hour. Many children made
more than 20 laps! With every 4 laps completed they received beaded
necklaces and bracelets to mark their accomplishments. There was
music, cheering family members and enthusiastic runners!
Due to the generosity of many contributors, raised nearly $21,000.
Organizers would like to thank all those, including many local
businesses for their generosity. Most of the donations amounted to
less than $20 so there are many who contributed and many who deserve thanks.
The Jarrettown Elementary Race for Education has raised $63,000 over
the past three years. That money has been used to outfit every
classroom at Jarrettown with Interwrite board technology. The
teachers use the boards all day long to enhance the student learning
process. With this year’s funds, the PTA hopes to install more
classroom computers for student use next year.
Kristin Haas and Christine Flynn co-chaired the Race this year for
the third time. They organized all aspects of this “community”
fundraising effort and the Jarrettown community pulls together for
children. Read More...

MGCA / Contact Point Speed Networking Event a Great Success
Based on the energy in the room, and the positive feedback from the
attendees, you knew this was a great event. Hosted by Contact Point
and the Maple Glen Community Association and emceed by Business
Development’s Brynne Tillman, the event gave people a chance to meet
and directly network with all 34 people at the event. First time
attendee Ken Hesbacher raved, “My first event speed networking and
what a huge success! I met 30 business owners of various sizes and
industries, and left with several new prospects and friends. I look
forward to attending future events with this group. The 2 minute
format gave me a chance to fine tune my message by repeating it so
often, and gave me a quick taste of what everyone else does, giving
me a chance to connect with those of interest later. Unlike most
networking events where you rarely meet half the crowd, this forced
everyone to meet, in a friendly, fun, fast paced format that kept you
on your toes and ready for more.”
MGCA member Sam Vinicur added “Speed Net was one of the best events
of its kind. I believe that new business will be the result.”
The meeting was set up as a round robin. Participants were paired up
at a table and each given 2 minutes to describe their businesses.
After the 4 minutes, one of the pair ‘rotated’ to the next table to
meet with another business owner, and so on. In the end, and through
some shifting of seats, everyone got to meet everyone else. Further,
the MGCA and CP provided a spreadsheet with everyone’s contact
information for the all important post-event follow up.
“This is one of the core MGCA goals – to promote networking and
business.” said MGCA President Dr Steven Greene. “This also gets
exposure for the group as well as Contact Point. About 30% of the
people at today’s event are not members and most have an interest in
joining the groups. Events like this help the MGCA to grow.” The
next MGCA meeting is Tuesday June 28th at 11:45 am. Contact Point
meets weekly on Wednesdays.
There are many networking events to attend in this area and it’s
difficult at times to pick the best ones. Everyone who attended this
event felt it was a good bang for the buck. While no date is set,
it’s likely that another speed networking event may be in the works
in the near future.
Contact Point member Ed Flanagan added “When I attend a typical
Networking event with more than 20 attendees, I usually come away
with 4-5 new contacts. At this event, I met all of the attendees and
made at least 10 new contacts. I would highly recommend this event
to everyone seeking to increase their network.”
“The best part of the event is the opportunity to meet everyone in a
structured environment where you can find out quickly if you and the
other person have anything in common. Since these are very short
meetings, you know who you want to reach out to and contact at a
later time. I attended the Speed Networking Event on Friday and found
it to be very beneficial. I enjoyed the format and the interaction
before and after the event. I feel that I have received many great
contacts and within a day of the event have already begun scheduling
follow up meetings with several of my contacts from this event. I
would certainly attend another one of these events in the future.”
said recent MGCA member Tim Fagan.

Penn View Brass Band Benefit Concert for Friends of Upper Dublin Public Library
Penn View Brass Band Benefit Concert for Friends of Upper Dublin Public Library
The Friends of Upper Dublin Public Library will present a benefit
concert featuring the Penn View Brass Band (PVBB) on Sunday, November
13th at the Jarrettown United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 1460
Limekiln Pike in Dresher. PVBB, an authentic British-style brass band
and a member of the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA),
was formed in 2008 and is based in Montgomery County. PVBB is one of
only a handful of brass bands in Pennsylvania. The band consists of
approximately 25 brass and percussion musicians from the greater
Philadelphia area. It was organized by local music educators Jim
O’Donnell and John Shaw (director). The band’s name comes from the
glimpse of William Penn atop Philadelphia’s City Hall as seen from
the Trooper Road location of the band’s rehearsal studio. PVBB
rehearsals are held in a music studio in a converted barn at the
O’Donnell’s residence, known as the “Penn View Farm.”
Brass bands date back to the early nineteenth century and England's
Industrial Revolution, with a vibrant tradition of competition based
around local industry and communities. Instrumentation includes
cornets, flugelhorns, tenor horns, baritones, trombones, euphoniums,
B flat and E flat basses, and percussion - no woodwind instruments.
Bands using the British instrumentation are the most common form of
brass band in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The band
will present a diverse, crowd-pleasing selection of music from
concert pieces to lighter works.
Advance sale tickets are available at the Upper Dublin Public
Library: Adults - $10; Members of the Friends of UDPL - $8; Children
13-18 - $5; and Children 12 and younger - Free. Tickets (same

The Highlands Craft Show Turning 30
Thirty years ago, a group of like-minded woman decided to take on a
worthy cause to raise funds to establish a garden endowment for The
Highlands Mansion. In 1981, The Highlands Craft Show was born and in
2011 it will celebrate its 30th Anniversary.
Over the years, the craft show committee members have worked
tirelessly to track down artists and crafts people from the
northeast. Each year the search was broadened and The Highlands
Craft Show now has artists who travel thousands of miles to
participate. This year, the exhibitors will include metal sculpture,
glass, ceramics, furniture and clothing; one of the accepted artists
creates water-colored painted flowers, cut and sculpted by hand.
Funds raised by the Craft Show support the restoration and

The Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 Comes to Graeme Park, Horsham

In 1793 Yellow Fever swarmed Philadelphia, killing an estimated 10%
of the city’s population. Like fire, the fever trapped the city’s
residents in a cloud of death and despair, not knowing the cause of
what plagued them or how to avoid it. The events of the summer and
fall of 1793 made country retreats like Graeme Park important havens,
as the only way to escape the city was to have somewhere else to go.
It was this epidemic that prompted Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson’s
nephew-in-law, William Smith, to take up residence at Graeme Park,
which they had purchased from Elizabeth in 1791. Not wanting to live
as a guest in her ancestral home, their move resulted in Elizabeth
leaving Graeme Park, first for a boarding house in Hatboro, and
