‘Gasland’ the Movie in Ambler
On Tuesday, June 14th, at 7:00 pm, "Gasland" the movie will be
presented free of charge at Ambler Mennonite Church.
Controversy is swelling around the process of removing natural gas
from Pennsylvania shale by the process of hydraulic fracturing called
“fracking.” What does the use of chemically laden water driven into
Pennsylvania’s land mean for the people of the commonwealth? In Josh Fox’s “Gasland,” the filmmaker embarks on a cross-country raod trip to discover the truth about “fracking” and ends up “uncovering a
trail of secrets, lies and contamination,” according to the films
website www.gaslandthemovie.com.
Following the film, Tracy Carluccio, Deputy Director of the Delaware
Riverkeeper Network, will lead a discussion. Carluccio has also
served as Executive Director of Del-AWARE Unlimited, organized to
stop an ecologically damaging interbasin transfer. The movement
culminated in voters overturning a county government that insisted on
supporting the project despite a majority referendum for its
cancellation.
More information can be found at www.gaslandthemovie.com and

Calligraphy
Calligraphy is defined in the dictionary as the art of beautiful
writing. It is derived from the Greek words Kallos (beautiful) and
Graphi (writing). Calligraphy has evolved a great deal from being an
ancient art form to being one of the most popular hobbies.
Boomer U at at 45 Forest Avenue in Ambler will offer a series of
classes beginning on Tuesday. September 13th.
No artistic skills are required. These classes will show you the
basic techniques of calligraphy, using a felt-tipped calligraphy pen.
You’ll acquire a great foundation in calligraphy. Learning the art of
calligraphy as a hobby is not expensive and, in fact, this is a hobby
that rewards you with praise plus an additional source of income, if
you choose to pursue that. It’s an expression of the beauty within
that shows up in your hand writing and wins you laurels every time
you pen a word.

Golf Outing to Raise Money for a Habitat Home
The annual “build day” at a local Habitat for Humanity home has long
been a favorite community service for the Rotary Club of Blue Bell.
This year, however, Rotarians are stepping up their commitment to
Habitat of Montgomery County by raising funds for a Rotary-sponsored
Habitat home.
“We’re out to raise $25,000,” says Blue Bell Rotary president, Dale
Rubinkam. “That’s a major undertaking for a 35 member group, but
with over 5400 families living below the poverty line here in
Montgomery County, the need for decent housing is essential, and we
can help.”
To tee off their fund-raising efforts, the Rotary will partner with
Habitat to stage a golf outing at prestigious Blue Bell Country Club
on August 22nd. The morning will begin with a continental breakfast,
followed by a “shotgun” start in a scramble format on the
challenging Arnold Palmer-designed course. As the tournament
progresses, refreshments will be served along the way. Raffles,
giveaways and a couple of surprises will add to the fun. A full BBQ
lunch is included, to which golfers may bring interested guests for
$35 each.
Rotarian John Dougherty, an experienced golf outing organizer, will
run the event. “It’s just the kind of occasion this community
likes,” he says. “We’re looking for 140 golfers at $150 each –
that’s before August 1st and $160 after that. The camaraderie and
good vibes of charity golf start one’s week on a high note,
especially on a course like Blue Bell Country Club’s. And next on our
Rotary/Habitat fundraising agenda is their 6th Annual Chefs of the
‘Burbs coming up on October 27th. That one’s all about great food and
fun, and all proceeds from the live auction will go to Habitat!”
Kim Delaney Tobin, Montgomery County Habitat’s Associate Director of
Development, is delighted with the Blue Bell Rotary partnership. “We
worked together last year on Chefs of the ‘Burbs, and the whole thing
was a great success. To be expanding our relationship with Rotary is
such an easy call. Habitat and Rotary are both committed to
community service, and we both work worldwide. But more specifically,
here in Montgomery County, both of our organizations know that the
need for affordable housing is real, especially now with the economy
in a rough patch.”
Habitat for Humanity is ranked as the sixth largest homebuilder in
the United States. Rotary International consists of business,
professional, and community leaders dedicated to providing
humanitarian service, encouraging high ethical standards in all
vocations, and helping to build goodwill and peace in the world.
For Blue Bell Rotary and Habitat of Montgomery County, building a
house together is a natural fit.
For tickets and information on the golf outing, visit
bluebellrotary.org or contact Dale Rubinkam at 267-664-567 or
lenape4@verizon.net or call John Dougherty at 215-872-3390.

Lawyers Host School Supply Drive for Local Foster Children
Montgomery Bar Association’s Women in the Law Committee, in
partnership with Montgomery County’s Office of Children and Youth,
are hosting a school supply drive to benefit children in foster care
here in Montgomery County. Through August 12th, drop off new school
supplies and book bags at the Montgomery Bar Association between the
hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, Monday – Friday. The building is
located at 100 West Airy Street in Norristown. Organizations
interested in joining MBA’s efforts should contact 610-279-9660.
Foster care affects thousands of children and families, as well as
society as a whole. Child welfare issues arise in families of every
race, ethnicity, culture, income and age group. Children and youth
are placed in foster care when their parents, or guardians, are no
longer able to ensure their essential wellbeing. These young people
need stable, loving care until they can either safely reunite with
their families or establish other lifelong relationships with a
nurturing adult. Your donation will help ease the burden on these
foster families and provide foster children with the educational
tools needed to excel in school and beyond.

Undefeated WMS Boys Tennis Team
Undefeated WMS Boys Tennis Team
The Wissahickon Boys' tennis team finished their season with a
perfect 10-0 record to become undefeated league champions once again.
Despite many postponed matches and rainouts, they were able to
complete most of their contests. The team is comprised of seventh
and eighth grade players who try out for the team in early March. The
Varsity squad consists of two singles players and three doubles
teams; "Exhibition" teams are all doubles. The JV team remained
undefeated as well. Jack Zhang and Srinivas Sunil led the team as co-
captains. Everyone remained undefeated in their individual positions
or recorded only one loss overall. An amazing team effort which
attests to their depth as a group, according to coach Carolyn Shaner.
Due to weather conditions, the league tournament was cancelled after
several postponements. Since the competition did not take place,
players were given medals according to their season records. The
entire Wissahickon team earned four first place gold medals and one
second place silver medal. This is a testament to their consistent
hard work and strong focus all year.
To end the season, the WMS girls' and boys' teams participated in
their annual mixed doubles tourney last week. Both teams share the
honor of being league champions for the last ten years.
