Recent studies have shown that reading skills improve when young children practice reading to dogs. Why dogs? It’s long been known that dogs have a calming influence on humans. Who better to benefit from this than young children in their first few years of school? Dogs don’t judge, or laugh, or care if you make mistakes. Shyness disappears when a child curls up with a furry buddy to read a book. A child can read to a dog for as little as 10 minutes at a time. Reading is all about practice and dogs have endless patience. The final results are amazing. Reading skills improve within weeks. Hesitant readers become proficient. And the dogs just go along with the program without any complaints. Kids with social issues, poor reading skills or fear of animals are the best candidates, but all children can profit from this experience. Only therapy and service animals are used and their handlers are with them throughout each session. This innovative program, tentatively called “Ruff and Ready Readers” will be coming to the Free Library of Springfield Township on June 6th. Advance signup will be required. Call the library at 215-836-5300 for additional information and to register. For more information on all the programs at the Library visit fls.mclinc.org. |
