Junior Girl Scout Troop 7289
Email Print
After completing the required badgework, Troop 7289 began their
service project by donating items to the zoo, volunteering at the
zoo’s Conservation Celebration, and collecting items that the zoo can
trade in for cash (such as Caprisun pouches and soda tabs). The
girls have also been working on goodie bags for the other scouts in
their Service Unit which include information about the Elmwood Park
Zoo, as well as handmade necklaces, owl 'swaps', and bookmarks. These
bags will be given to 170 fellow Girl Scouts to help spread the word
about the Elmwood Park Zoo. Other service activities to benefit the
zoo will be completed during the month of June.
During the course of this service project, the highlight for many of
the girls was adopting an animal through the Zoo Parent Program. The
girls voted on which animal to adopt, and the ‘winning’ animal was a
cougar. The Zoo Parent Program helps the zoo tremendously, as the
grocery bill for all the animals each year is nearly $50,000! The
money donated by the Zoo Parent helps provide food, enrichment, and
veterinary care. Many of the scouts were able to see their adopted
cougar at the zoo on the day of the Conservation Celebration, as well
as read the Zoo Parent Board that lists the names of individuals or
groups that adopt animals at the zoo.
The Girl Scouts in Troop 7289 hope that their efforts will help
spread the word about the Elmwood Park Zoo and the wonderful programs
it offers. It is an educational, fun, and affordable way to spend
the day – and is so close to home! With memberships that pay for
themselves in just two or three visits, great programs such as
birthday parties and sleepovers, a family friendly atmosphere, and a
great staff comprised of many volunteers, The Elmwood Park Zoo is
truly a treasure to have in our area!
