Fifth-grader, Samara Cheifetz was the third to generate the four- figure donation. Samara’s mother, Stephanie sent the following note to PE teacher and Jump Rope for Heart (JRFH) Organizer, Dan Green: “Good morning Mr. Green, I had to touch base with you to let you know that my daughter has had one of the most wonderful experiences with JRFH this year … I wanted to share it with you. Samara chose to become fully engaged with her fundraising, so, in lieu of asking for donations, she decided to sell note cards that were hand-designed using her own watercolor paintings. She spent some time creating 12 different designs, which she sold for $7/set. Raising the money was exciting for her, and now she is overjoyed about giving you her envelope today; however, Samara benefitted from this fundraiser in many other ways. Through email, setting up at a flea market, face-to-face meetings (with family, friends, neighbors), she connected with so many people. The response she got as a result of her efforts was incredible. Not only was her own participation acknowledged, but she heard beautiful stories about other people’s efforts. For example, at the flea market, she spoke with a woman who just came back from Haiti and was volunteering her OT services to help the earthquake victims. Samara personally responded to all of the orders sent via email. It was interesting to see the dialogue that went beyond “I’d like to order….”and “thank you for your order.” Truly, I could not have given Samara a better opportunity to expand her mind and her heart. She began her efforts as soon as the information was sent home. It was a lot of work - the cards took some time to make, we made endless trips to crafts and office supply stores, and we hand-delivered most of the orders. 182 sets (over 1400 cards)! However, the hard work has made this super personal and super special for Samara.” At a recent Town Meeting at Fort Washington Elemetary, Mr. Green was proud to bring Samara’s accomplishment to the attention of the entire student body. Her efforts and satisfaction are sure to add motivation for next year’s JRFH.
