Coming Soon: Nooks at the Library
Email Print
One of our goals as a library is to bring information and literacy to
our community. The Nooks allow us to embrace new technology, offer
another avenue to reading, and create an atmosphere in which literacy
can be achieved in a variety of ways. Either through a book or
eReader, if people are reading and we are providing the means for
people to explore, learn, and grow; then we are doing our job. Being
able to check out a Nook will allow our customers the opportunity to
test drive the technology and see if it fits their lifestyle and
reading habits. When you can take the Nook home you can get a true
feel for the device. You can’t gain this experience in a store setting.
The new Nook is touted as the simple touch reader by Barnes and
Noble. They are smaller than the original and color Nooks and are
very easy to use. The Nook touch features a 6” touch screen, a long
lasting battery, and is very light and thin weighing less than 7.5
ounces. Not to mention the font can be adjusted, so if you like the
large print books, you are all set with the Nook!
The William Jeanes Memorial Library has been able to provide the
Nooks to our customers thanks to funding from the library’s operating
budget and money from the Friends of the Library through the Mary
Knowles Technology Fund. The Friends of the Library is a group of
volunteers who help support and raise money for the library so it can
carry out its mission and goals. Without the funding and support of
the Friends we would not have been able to purchase all 12 Nooks.
We will require that everyone who checks out a Nook be at least 18
years old and sign a borrowing agreement form. Parents, if you want
your kids to be able to use the Nook, just make sure you are with
them to fill out the form. We are allowing Whitemarsh residents the
option to place a Nook on hold or you can walk in and see if one is
available. They will be lent out for a period of two weeks, which is
the same amount of time as any of our “new” books.
Not sure how to use the Nook touch or even sure if you want the
device? Are you thinking to yourself, this really isn’t for me? Never
fear we can help you out. We can demonstrate how to use it. The staff
will be trained on how to use the devices. They can walk you through
the process of finding the book library, selecting a title, getting
to the correct page and feeling comfortable with it before you leave
the library. Each device will also have the operating instructions
with it in case you need a quick reference guide to help you out.
Embracing new technology allows our library and customers to remain
current in this ever changing society. We are busy updating and
refreshing our collections and the Nook is a wonderful addition to
our library. Along with aggressively purchasing new titles, best
sellers and those wonderful summer reads, we have also been adding
BluRay DVD’s, Wii and Xbox 360 games. So stop in and see what might
be waiting for you at the William Jeanes Memorial Library. If you
have an idea or technology you would like to see in the library, let
us know! Don’t forget to check out the Nook, its literally books and
technology at your fingertips.
