ASTM International recently made a $5,000 donation to the Conshohocken Free Library. Posing with two touch screen computers purchased with a similar donation in 2010 are Jane Leven, Branch Manager and Librarian at the Library, John Pace, Vice President, Publications and Marketing, ASTM International, and Brian Coll, President, Conshohocken Free Library Branch Advisory Board. Children as young as one year old have been using the computer station. In addition to the computers, the 2010 donation was used to purchase a new computer table and chairs specifically designed for children and more than 100 children's picture books. According to Leven, this year's donation will be used toward iPads with educational applications for children to use in the library, acquisitions in children's and young adult fiction sections, and a stand alone access station for Internet Reservation Console. Librarian Leven, who was recently awarded the Daylin Leach 2011 Public Librarian of the Year Award, noted that ASTM's continued support has contributed greatly, particularly in areas in which the library's budget has been cut. ASTM has also made other recent contributions to the Conshohocken area. They have sponsored a group of first graders from Bridgeport Elementary School on a class trip to Riverbend Environmental Education Center. The young students met a turtle, a snake and other animals during their visit. The trip was part of ASTM International's ongoing sponsorship of educational programs at Riverbend. Later that day, second graders at Conshohocken Elementary School met for the last session of their afterschool nature class, which is run by Riverbend and sponsored by ASTM. The students, posing here with Lesley West, director, Graphic Design, Digital Output and Production Services, learned about worms, composting, seeds and keeping nature healthy during their final class of the school year. ASTM International is committed to good corporate citizenship. Since moving its headquarters in 1995 to West Conshohocken, the Society has actively supported charitable causes in West Conshohocken and Conshohocken as well as in greater Montgomery County and in the Philadelphia area. This commitment is evidenced by ASTM's support of youth education and senior groups; local fire, traffic and safety personnel; and a cooperative relationships with community leaders. |
